A nationwide survey conducted in June 2014 by Spain's state-owned polling institute Centro de Investigaciones Sociológicas (CIS) showed the popularity gap between the two big clubs and the rest. When asked which football club, 37.9% of Spaniards answered they like most, with Real Madrid, followed in order by FC Barcelona (25.4%), Atlético Madrid (6.1%), FC Valencia (3.5%), Athletic Bilbao (3.3%), Betis Sevilla (3.2%), Real Sociedad (1.9%), Deportivo La Coruña (1.5%), Real Zaragoza and Celta Vigo (1.3%). The spell was only broken in 1994/95, when the team coached by Jorge Valdano, led by stars like Raúl, Iván Zamorano, Fernando Redondo and Michael Laudrup, broke Cruyff's FC Barcelona winning streak. The club was able to prevent relegation in 1973/74 in the relegation round, but in 1977/78 they ended up in second division as bottom of the table. Finally, in 2007, coach Karl Daxbacher managed the much-acclaimed promotion to the Bundesliga – after 6 years in the second division. Only after several years of development work, a number of trainer experiments and games in front of just a few hundred spectators was it possible to turn the headlines back into positive territory and lead LASK to an economic and sporting upward trend.
In the amateur championship in 1931, the club had played through Lustenau 07 and SAK 1914 to the final, where GAK was waiting. In 1995, the club slipped into a financial crisis when LASK became insolvent with a debt of 25 million schillings. LASK ended the promotion season in 6th place. After a mud fight with President Reichel regarding his handshake contract, Daxbacher then switched back to his parent club Austria. Daxbacher was already LASK coach from 2006 to 2008 and at that time had separated from LASK in a dispute with President Reichel. In the summer of 2006 his contract was extended by one year. In 2006, LASK ended the season as runners-up in the second-class first division behind SCR Altach as the clear favorite for promotion. After the club had to admit defeat to SV Urfahr Linz in the league in 1928, it soon experienced its most successful era before the Second World War under coach Sepp Gurtner. In 1984 the club survived the first round against Östers IF relatively easily, then failed at Dundee United.
In 1985, LASK from Linz also came through Baník Ostrava in round 2 and sensationally beat Inter Milan 1-0 at home with a goal by Johann Gröss. Away, however, it was 0: 4, with Alessandro Altobelli scoring three times. Under coach František Bufka and assistant coach Laszlo Simko, Linz became the first non-Vienna club to win the championship with a 2-0 win over Vienna, beating 1. Wiener Neustädter SC 1-0 and 1-1 also the ÖFB Cup and thus the double. This final was repeated in 1932, and this time the people of Graz were able to celebrate after clearly winning the finals 2-0 and 4-2. To date, the club have held the inglorious record of failing in the first round in five European appearances, with a 7-0 loss to Újpest FC being particularly painful. Curiously, in the obsolete championship game in the penultimate round between LASK and FC Linz, which took place ten days after the merger, they lost 0:3. As a result, LASK took over some players from FC Linz, otherwise the traditional workers' club was practically wiped out. In contrast to other sports communities in the GDR Oberliga, Hansa initially avoided selling players to the financially strong clubs in West Germany, which was also possible thanks to the player contracts, which were comparatively high at the beginning of 6,000 Deutsche Mark (about 3,000 euros) per month.
In the event of a tie, there is a division of points and each of the two clubs receives a point for the table. The board of directors of the Pro League made a corresponding decision on April 2, 2020. All clubs had to make the final decision in a general assembly, which was postponed several times. On May 25, 2015, a press release announced that Oliver Glasner, who was still the coach of SV Ried at the time, would switch to the LASK manager next season. The LASK footballers were able to celebrate their first title win in 1924 by winning the Upper Austrian state championship and thus for the first time dethroned the four-time champion SK Vorwarts Steyr for the first time. With the Viennese newcomer Turl Brinek, who was four years earlier still in the world selection, succeeded in 1957/58 winning the B-League and the associated resurgence. For the first time, four Serie A teams qualified directly for the group stage of the Champions League. Reserve teams were not eligible for promotion. In December 2013, after an extraordinary general meeting, the investor group "Freunde des LASK" around the new President Wolf-Dieter Holzhey took over the club. Since the European Swimming Association LEN only agreed to swimming at the European Games after renegotiations, only pure junior competitions were held.
